Rest isn’t a reward

4 min read

A lot of people I work with treat rest like a prize. They’ll sit down once the inbox is empty, the house is clean and everyone else is taken care of. The trouble is that the list never ends, so the rest never comes.

Rest is maintenance

Think of rest less like a reward and more like charging your phone. You don’t wait until the phone has earned it. You charge it so it keeps working.

Not all rest is the same

Scrolling on the couch can look like rest and still leave you drained. It helps to notice what actually restores you. For some people that’s movement. For others, it’s quiet, time with a friend or making something with their hands.

Start smaller than you think

  • Take ten minutes between two tasks, before you’re exhausted.

  • Put one restful thing in your calendar and keep it like an appointment.

  • Notice the guilt when it shows up, and rest anyway.

If rest feels impossible no matter what you try, that’s worth paying attention to. Sometimes it’s a sign of burnout, anxiety or a life that’s asking too much of you. That’s something we can look at together.

Want to talk about it?

If something here hit close to home, a free 15-minute call is a low-pressure first step.

If you’re in crisis, please don’t wait for an appointment. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 if you’re in immediate danger. Outside the US, contact your local emergency number.
